PRK

A LASIK Alternative in Dallas: PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) actually pre-dates LASIK vision correction by several years. An alternative to LASIK, this refractive procedure can produce similar vision results as LASIK, correcting vision for patients who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. PRK may be recommended over LASIK for vision correction if you have certain vision conditions such as thin corneas or dry eyes.

How Does PRK Differ from LASIK?

The first step of a refractive procedure involves the repositioning or removal of a thin section of your cornea’s outer layer (the epithelium). During iLASIK at Vision Quest, a corneal flap is created using a laser. This flap is hinged and folded over to allow access to the underlying corneal tissue.

For patients that have thin corneas, this corneal flap process is too risky and can cause complications during healing. However, the PRK procedure does not involve a corneal flap; instead, a thin layer of epithelium tissue is gently removed to allow that same level of access to the underlying tissue. The remaining steps of the procedure are the same as iLASIK: your cornea is reshaped using the Advanced CustomVue Treatment to correct mild to severe nearsightedness, farsightedness and all types of astigmatism.

PRK patients can expect a slightly longer recovery time as compared to iLASIK because the epithelium tissue will need time to regenerate (typically 3-5 days). Typically, PRK recovery is more uncomfortable than LASIK, but the surgeons at Vision Quest take extra measures to decrease discomfort.

Is the PRK Procedure Customized?

Yes. Every PRK procedure at Vision Quest is based on WaveScan technology. Just as in our iLASIK procedure, we perform a series of tests to create a 3D diagram of the individual characteristics and the unique imperfections of your eyes. This is used to create a custom treatment specifically for you.

Am I a Candidate for PRK?

You may be a good candidate for PRK if you:

  • Are at least 21 years old
  • Have good overall health
  • Have had a stable, valid vision prescription for at least one year
  • Are free from eye disease
